How can we harness the potential of green energy instead of limiting it? Can Poland’s district heating sector become one of the largest consumers of energy from renewable sources?

These questions are addressed in the report “SECTOR COUPLING in Poland: Green Energy for District Heating—How to Harness the Potential of Renewable Energy Instead of Limiting It?”, prepared by the Polish Wind Energy Association, the RE-Source Poland Hub Foundation, and Horizons Power To Heat.

The report presents a comprehensive analysis of the possibilities for integrating the electricity and heating sectors and shows how Power-to-Heat technologies and heat storage can increase the use of energy from renewable sources, limit curtailment of renewable energy generation, and support the decarbonization of Poland’s heating sector.

Analyses show that the technical potential for the green electrification of Poland’s district heating sector using thermal storage could reach as much as 42 TWh per year, which corresponds to approximately 40% of current district heating production. This means that the district heating sector could become one of the key consumers of green energy, while simultaneously supporting the further development of renewable energy sources and the transformation of the entire energy system.

During the launch event, the key findings and recommendations regarding the development of sector coupling in Poland will be presented, along with the steps necessary to effectively harness the potential of renewable energy sources in the heating sector.
